Our Process Advocacy and Candidate Endorsement

Membership

Anyone who wants to engage in the state of AISD’s affairs can become general Member of Austin Kids First by registering on our website. Our members will receive information to keep up-to-date on the latest with news within AISD, and will be solicited for input on our election-year endorsements. Each member will be asked to rank every district and at-large candidate. You can become a member by joining our mailing list.  We also ask you to consider making a financial contribution.

Timeframe: Year Round

Candidate Recruitment

The 2018 School Board election is a critical local election. That’s why we are looking for Superhero School Board candidates to advocate for our kids. The next Board of Trustees will face unique challenges and will be expected to continue moving the district forward toward high quality public schools for all kids. Visit our Superheroes page to let us know if you or someone you know may be interested in running for AISD Board of Trustees.

Timeframe: Spring & Summer 2018
Candidate Filing Deadline: August 20th, 2018

Candidate Questions & Responses

Our endorsement committee will work to assemble a set of important questions for each trustee candidate. Our questionnaire will be designed to draw out how the candidates approach their role as advisors and problem solvers and assess their leadership skills. Every candidate will be asked to submit written responses to the full questionnaire. The responses will be used to create full candidate profiles posted to our website.

Timeframe: August 2018
Candidate Response Deadline: August 31st, 2018

Grading & Endorsement

After candidates have responded to our questionnaire, our membership and board will rate each candidate. Our membership base and endorsement committee determine our endorsements. Endorsed candidates will receive strategic, financial and volunteers support for their campaign.

Timeframe: Mid-September 2018

Mobilization

With our slate of candidates endorsed and supported financially, our focus will shift to informing citizens about the importance of informed voting in the November election. In recent years, less than 5% of AISD residents voted in school board races. That’s why our members will work diligently across the entire community to ensure voters are aware of the races, candidates, and polling locations.

Timeframe: Early Fall

Early Voting Starts: October 22, 2018

Election Day: November 6, 2018
